8 hp merc engine short shaft .

Ok, found 50:1 ratio online from a guy from the larger forum who sent me a digital owners manual. WOW!
I got a deal on the merc so I tought I would give it a try seeing how my Yamaha transum bracket failed totally Monday. The water intake pick ups on the merc are on the cavitation plate not on the side of the housing. I am sucking air in a 1' sea. So let's consider the options: 1) extend the shaft on the merc, any idea of cost for that? 2) put a swinging motor mount on the transum? Would that solve the problem? 3) sell the merc & get a new Honda? Cost? 4) sell the merc & put the old engine back on. thanks for the input guys. boating is fun. Allen
