I mean, when I did mine, I'm sure there are people that thought I probably overkilled it... hell, I did myself! However, I never want to do the damned thing again, so overkill (as Bob adroitly pointed out) on SEALING it... I don't think that can be done. Once buttoned up... heck, even to this day... I wonder/hope I didn't accidently miss a small spot somewhere. My point is, GO FOR THE OVERKILL (and rest easier)!!
I stuck my digital down into the tank a couple of weeks or so back. Haven't downloaded and looked at the pics yet, but on the small screen of the camera, the 'wrap-around' shots I took all looked well. Only thing I forgot to do last fall was open her up, and wet-vac the residual water out of her. Thus, I found about an inch of water pooled around the lower mast support... and I don't want that water there through the years, freezing, contracting, as that is what destroyed the original factory OEM epoxy/resin coat.
So... think I'll leave the port through my sole another year, check her out again next fall/spring.
