the deeper you reef, the further it droops. Some of the way older boats had battens on the end of the boom so the leech had a larger area to roll around. Some people stuff towels in as they are rolling.
Using the boom with battens on it is probably the best. It was handy, but jiffy reefing ( I prefer a two line setup) is far quicker and easier to do. Plus you get a better sail shape.
The extended track also allows the boom to be down hauled after the sail is peaked with the halyard. Easier to get good luff tension that way.
