I think it puts less strain on the sail. In this pic you can see the reef grommets along the luffs of the sails- three on the main and one on the working jib. We carry the first reef point rigged always, the second rove off when offshore and hope we never need the third The reef point on the jib takes it to roughly storm jib size.
