Right now there is a deteriorated silicon (or some other sealant) bead around the base of the mast; but I doubt it is effectively keeping water out. Which is fine by me. I know there are a couple places where rain water can get INTO the mast, and I'd just assume have that water find a way OUT of the mast. For awhile I though that might be how the water was getting into the boat, in fact. So I cut away the headliner area above the compression post. Nope. No water coming in there. I was replacing the compression post anyway, so this seemed like a good thing to do.
I'm occasionally tempted to just cut away half the ceiling to see what is really happening. But until I have a clean project plate (I have so much work going on at my new house, I've barely been out sailing at all this year) I don't want to start a job like that. Still, if I can't solve the problem before the end of next season, I think I may just do that during my winter 2008-9 layover.
I'm out of town on business so any pictures will have to wait. Sorry.
