question about Merriman winches

My old Kestrel came with the standard sheet winches, which I believe are old Merrimans, the kind with the slotted winch handle. Here's my question: does anybody know how you open these things up to clean and oil the pawls and stuff? In the center of the top, there's a little pry-off cap about the size of a quarter. But no fastener underneath it that would allow the winch drum to lift off. Anybody got any ideas?
