i have no way to measure the shroud or stays with a guage.i bought the boat in may.the rig was very loose then and it had not been sailed for at least 3 years.had an experienced friend help with tightening-up.we followed the advise i read in sail magazine not to get it so tight that you deform the cabin top.went sailing twice.came in from the previously mentioned outing and found the back stay and base mounting so loose that it wiggled back and forth.two of the port and starboard shrouds were loose too.tightened-up again(in june)sailed twice, and had the boat hauled for a bottom job.tightened-up again using two levels to make sure i kept the mast sraight.sailed in sept.and last sat.i felt that the rig had lost some of it's tension after we docked.my sailing friend says that steel lines can stretch a small amount.should i check the shroud and stay fittings at the mast top?this boat is 30 yrs.old and has seen almost no maint.in ten years before i bought it.the turnbuckles would have a hard time backing off since i kept half the cotter keys sticking out just in case i had to go thru this process again.thanks.
