Thanks for the info. My gudgoen was actually welded to both sides (top and bottom), so it came off as one solid piece - which did mean I had to cut a chunk (approx 3" x 3") out of the rudder, directly under the rudder shaft/pintle, so the gudgeon had enough room to slide off the pintle.
It had obviously been repaired / welded, as originally, it would have been 2 pieces, as you described. Now that I have removed it as one pieice though, and considering the inherent weakness / problems incurred at the small weld area connecting the tube pieces to each side, I still think a one piece, heavily built unit would have far less chance of breaking - although it would mean more work, if the rudder needs to be removed in the future. Further thoughts??
PS - I don't intend to remove the rudder for many years after this, and repairing the cut-out chunk of the rudder, and skeg will be an easy job.
