If you have already removed enough of the rudder to get the welded one out I can't see any problem with what you were thinking of doing. And as you say you shouldn't have to remove it again for years. This is a link to our top bearing for the rudder shaft we had made. http://users.tpg.com.au/gibsonkc/rudder.jpg We has now converted the boat to wheel.
