Seafarer Mast Step

The mast on my 26 ft seafarer is stepped on my cabin top and is secured with two screws on each side of the mast. What is the mast step made of? What is behind the fiberglass of the mast base underneath the mast step? I would like to know this so that I may, if possible, secure turning blocks without drilling any more holes into my mast.
