Jerry:
Truly depends on perspective. I am looking back from 80 to how much sailing I had ahead of me in retirement when I was 50. My twin sons were 49 yesterday and one was here with his sons a week ago and we spent a day on the Ceilidh. When John was in his early teens we used to take the Morgan 33 out on Lake Erie and swing the kids out on the boom and they did a "dead man drop" of the boat. That was the main thing my son wanted his boys to experience off the Ceilidh last week. Little did I know then the memories we were creating for him. That was nearly 30 years ago!
I too am thinking of giving up sailing but it is developing slowly-I don't want to do it! And all these years-I never had a year that I did ALL the sailing I wanted too.It is our nature.
I can only suggest to all of you to enjoy every moment of it. Jay comments (and very well too) on the glance back at the boat as they leave. Isn't that neat? It will always be a memory he can look back on. Boating creates those kind of moments. Those bottom slamming moments that Dave mentions-some day he will recall and chuckle "I did it." I too had a scary adventure returning the Morgan to Sandusky from Tobermory and will never forget it. And I say "I did it".
This forum gives us all an opportunity to vicariously join in the adventures of others. It has been and is a blessing to me. And a confidence builder in the boat. There are adventures and there are the memories of them when you can't be comfortable doing them anymore and we all have them. As amatuer sailors we are blessed. John M. (Ceilidh)
