Hi Dan, Yes, you have a difficult decision! But here are some facts for you...
1. the S24 and S25 are really not different in length, just model designations. 2. the S24 is likely to have a centerboard where the S25 will have a fixed wing keel. Some of the later S24's had the fixed wing keel as well. Either has its advantages; the fixed wing does not require to be lowered or raised, but at the same time, the S25 does not like to be heeled past 15 degrees before it has considerable side slip. The centerboard, when down, should not experience that sort of slip. 3. the head on the S24 is just behind the v-berth where the S25 is adjacent to the companionway. 4. the 1994 S25 is in the middle of the stretch for the mast compression issues, the S24 is before that time. Have a surveyor look at each boat if you are serious and have him/her pay close attention to the cabin top/inner arch looking for signs of the issues. 5. the outboard vs. diesel is an interesting one. When I bought mine I wasnted the diesel as I read that the performance in rough seas is much better (the outboard can pull out during a pitch and cavitate). Outboards are very easy to maintain, however, and can be upgraded or changed comparitively inexpensively. Also, the diesel is heavy for this boat. On diesel equipped S25's, the nose is light. I am planning on adding 200 lbs extra ballast in the nose on mine this season by purchasing an aux water bag.
This is all just a start, I hope it helps!
Dan
