Hi Dan, We have a 90 S24 (actually a 25) that had compression issues. Here's a few things you can look for. First off, on our boat you could grab the outer shroud and tug on it sharply and see the cabin top flex downward at the mast base. Ours flexed enough that the mast base pushed into the cabin top. One other thing is that inside the cabin, the door into the v-berth would bind on the cabintop when trying to open, especially under sail.
This shows how the mast base pushed into and cracked the gelcoat
And cracked through below
The problem with ours is that the adhesive and screws attaching the bulkhead to the arch gave way, and the arch was able to flex up and down, you can see the screws deviated down here
In case you're wondering how it turned out, I'll show you so you can see a another fix and opinion... it wasn't a terribly difficult fix, I re-glassed the mast base
And finished it(the paint didn't match the greatest but it'll be fine after a few years of sun and dirt )
Then fabricated an additional bulkhead support with glass over plywood
Installed it with screws, adhesive, and thickened epoxy
You can see how it sits on the bulkhead here and I used a fillet of thickened epoxy to join it to the cabintop
Didn't look too bad when all said and done
Then added additional support to the aft side of the bulkhead
Which supported the arch even more
FWIW, we sailed the boat 3 seasons as it was and didn't encounter any problems except that it flexed and creaked a bit, but the fix stiffened up the entire boat and the rig is much tighter so obviously the boat sails better on all points and the difference was truely noticable.
Hope that helps in your assessment of a new boat, and best of luch with your search.
Jay
