Paul, I first noticed an issue while out on the water by myself. I was having difficulty getting the boat speed above 5 kts under power or sail while sitting on the little funky round wooden seat on my S25. Once I had an autopilot and was free to walk the boat, I noticed that if I went forward the boat would pick up 1/2 kt.
This turned into quite a thread of discussion back when Scott in Minnessota was on the list (yes, I know, this is a few years ago now) and the conscensous at the time was that if the forward water tank was kept full, the boat would tack better as well.
Adding up the speed fact with the tacking fact, as well as the comment in the owner manual that the mast is even raked different with the diesel inboard, I have personally came to the copnclusion that the weight and balance is off.
I have since conducted trials with other crew members on board (don't ever tell them they are there for balast...LOL!) in different places on the boat, and I feel that with food in the lockers below, a minimum of stuff in the cockpit locker, full fuel, full water tank in the nose, and 1/2 full waste tank, 200 lbs more is needed in the nose. I will also add that I also have two deep cycle batteries up there, so if an owner puts a starting battery next to the engine, more compensation may be needed forward.
