Bill, Just wanted to let you know that often the only dogs that make the news are the ones that run away. The good ones that stay home don't get the attention. We have a 1994 that does NOT have a mast compression problem.
It came to us factory stock from the previous owner with a extensive log book. I dealt with him directly. We developed a mutual understanding by phone and email based on trust. The previous owner was an attention to detail type of person just like me so we got along just fine. I was aware of mast compression stories thanks to this Forum. I drove 850 miles and was not dissapointed.
I thought about a survey only because it was a distance away, but did not. My philosophy is KNOW KNOW KNOW your boat gently down the stream... Are you going to get a survey next year or any year after before you splash it and are responsible for others onboard? You need to know this stuff yourself in my opinion.
I am in the process of adding some structural support to the mast bulkhead and other areas to spread the loads more evenly to more of the hull (similar to Breeze Courier). There are areas I would bolster even if I had a later model year as well. I'm doing it because I would rather have it over engineered, enjoy woodworking projects and have lots of old growth mahogany.
If you are truly looking for a deal in order to make a purchase possible wait till this fall when the economy is even more in the tank and the right boat at the right price will find you. Any boat has added value right now just because it is Spring. Just another perspective. Good luck in your search.
