I will be the first to acknowledge that riding a motorcycle is more risky than either driving a car/truck or sailing or many other leisure time activities. I also appreciate the position you are in with your son. The decision to ride or not is a personal one and I respect anyone who has given it thoughtful consideration and chosen to not ride.
I also stopped riding when my children were young. I understand it completely.
Risk management is something all motorcycle riders ought to be constantly reviewing in their mind. I have done the following:
Taken a rider education course.
Ride at all times with:
Full face helmet. Armored Jacket (high viz yellow)
Dang, doesn't that jacket make me look younger and better looking? Armored Pants Leather boots Elk skin gloves.
This is a view of the front of my bike:
I also have an air horn.
And, of course, ABS.
I NEVER drink and ride. No exceptions, ever.
And I ride like you all are trying to kill me. Not on purpose, but kill me none the less.
And still, after all the above, it is more risky to ride and I have chosen to accept that risk.
And because you have the urge, you know why I do.
