I have an air horn on my Aprilia -- really surprises the cagers who are trying to take my lane.
As far as kids, I have a 2 1/2 year old and have not stopped riding.
We all take risks in life just by walking out the door. With this one, I personally just try to minimize the risks to me as much as possible by taking most of the steps Bud mentions above.
When I took the MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) class about 10 years ago, they gave us a sheet of paper listing all the motorcycle deaths in our state the past year. IIR, well over 90% were the result of intoxication, and an even higher percentage were not wearing a helmet. It really gives the sport a bad name and frustrates me to no end when I see a row of bikes parked in a row outside a bar. Don't drink and ride!
If anyone is even slightly considering taking up motorcycling, I highly recommend looking up the closest MSF school. They're often taught at community college. They provide the motorcycle and gear -- you can see if you even enjoy the sport before investing any money, in addition to learning how to properly ride!
