while the sail is down - onlt with the sail fully hoisted does the boom lift off the binimi and clears it easily during tacks. One note - when the main sheet is hauled down hard, as would be the case for pointing in higher winds (flattening the sail) the boom (on y boat) does push down on the bimini frame a bit and I would not want to tack because the motion would wear the sunbrella cloth in that area.

Note that I usually drop the dodger down during sailing so I can see better forward. One mod I am working on this week is to cut the plastic of the didger and put some zippers in it so that I cal roll the plastic up rather than have to drop the whole thing as seen here... (sailing on Chesapeake Bay in the drizzle)
