We have a crude topping lift on our boat. It's a piece of stainless wire that is swaged to the backstay and has a snap on the end that hooks to the end of the boom. Not the best pic but you can kinda see it here
Here's another shot of it hanging, we usually snap it to the backstay as it swings around a bit when sailing
We helped a friend rig their new Mac 26S last summer and it had a nice topping lift that was attached to the top of the mast. It ran all the way down to the level of the boom and on the bottom end was an adjustable loop. It hooked to the aft end of the boom and stayed hooked all the time, you didn't have to unclip it while sailing like ours. I liked the conveniance of it.
I thought I took pictures of the doggone thing but seem to have lost them.
