I certainly had thought of this in general terms, but this is a really good way to put it.

I used to sail a SunCat, and sometimes, I would pull up the centerboard to get more drift to clear a point, etc.

Hadn't thought of measuring my drift; just noticed a difference when I didn't have the board.

I have a tracker on the iphone; it uses a lot of juice. I haven't got a GPS, other than the old Magellan 300. I don't even know if I can remember how to use it, although I did find the user manual online and printed it off just in case.
