I did a two-day ASA basic keelboat training and got a lot from it. Info as well as confidence. Did not realize I had the chops to sail San Diego Bay on a windy day, but there I was on a Capri 22 holding four other people's lives in my hand along with the mainsheet. The instructor wasn't the least bit worried about what I was doing and that helped me relax.
Now, after sailing 5 years, I got a huge compliment. I thanked my wife for coming out with me a lot this year and remarked that she seemed happier and more relaxed when we were out, as compared to years past. She said: "That's because YOU'RE more relaxed and don't yell as much as you used to."
Pics of an obviously relaxed spousal sailing experience:
I guess my nervousness was making me tense and harder to be around, but apparently I'm a much more mellow fellow when skippering.
