Charles , I have been using this method for several years.I sail on Lake Michigan. We have some fair sized waves from powerboaters and ferries. For myself I have found that more tension on the bungie helps. Your boat appears more sensitive to where someone walks on the deck, than our 25 Oday.
We had our last two mainsails made with slugs.I cannot say enough good things about them.I'm not sure but I think that the boltropes went out with ratlines and belaying pins! I do understand your trepidation with outboards. We've been through five in the last five years and the trust factor is just not there. We keep our boat on a mooring for the summer. We've sailed off and returned to the mooring under sail, just for practice."Just in case" the motor decides not to start. As for arm chair coaching, you boys down south are all we have. The lakes up here aren't frozen over for iceboating yet.Lake Michigan is only for daysailing ,unless you want to anchor.Moorings aren't allowed from mid October through mid March.
