Ed, The first week I had my sailboat, I sailed it nearly every night right after work. One night, I was bringing the boat in under some adverse circumstances, due to the winds and tides. It was a picture perfect docking and a little old guy on a bench on the marina point, was applauding enthusiastically. I felt gratified. SOMEBODY recognizes Good Seamanship!
I went to the parking lot, just as the Metro-Dade police car that patrols the marina was swinging through the parking lot. He had seen my sailboat coming in. "Nice night for sailboats." He said, referring to the windy evening. "Yeah, it is." I replied. "The old guy seems to think so, too." "Oh, Jesus?" The cop answered. "He's a drunk! He was clapping before you ever got there!! He lost his driver's license due to drunk driving and waits on the bench for his ride, after he gets off work at the marina restaurant! Been there four months and we're STILL not sure what he's clapping at!"
Another Ego Deflated!
