If all you have is a VHF, lights and a wet cell then you probably dont need one. I have a Yamaha 9.9 4 stroke which generates 10A. It was hooked directly into my single G27 wet cell battery and it worked fine, however the voltage would rise to 17.5v when the battery was fully charged and I wasnt running anything. This was fine for my speed and depth instruments, lights, GPS and VHF, however the stereo I had did not like it and would shut itself down and my ST4000+ autopilot would go haywire/burn out. Then I replaced the G27 wet cell with a G31 gel cell and installed a regulator because 17v is too high for a gel cell battery and they are too expensive to allow them to get wrecked. That cured my autopilot and stereo problems too. Many other F31 owners with the same engine had the same problems and the same fix solved their problems.
