My 9 year old daughter purchased her first, very own, sailboat last year. She spent $50 on a twenty year old Styrofoam Sea Snark with extra parts from another. I would not buy one new, but if you can find one used for under a hundred bucks, it's a hoot to bomb around in. It weigh's next to nothing and is unsinkable. It is sailing at it's simplest. No blocks, no cleats, you trim the sail holding a line directly attached to the boom. It's not a great sailboat, but it is a great opportunity for my daughter to have and sail her own boat.
