I'd be curious about speed too. I do note that he added some kind of bowsprit, so probably has a bigger jib/genoa to go with his new mast. And what was he able to get rid of in terms of ballast? If it isn't the X, then are we talking about a centerboard or a keel? If he got rid of a lot of weight and added sail area, it might be quite fast in lighter air. I think in heavier air is where the inherent limitation of the main hull will be felt; unlike a designed-from-the-start tri, which would have a length:beam ratio of 8:1 or more, this is bound to be much fatter, and you may hit a hull speed not much different than what you started with as a mono (but little to no heeling!). So what you've probably got is a very stable, roomy, not fast trimaran, perhaps for a lot less money than an off the shelf F boat, which would present a much different trade off of speed for accomodations. Am I off base on my assumptions?
