Trimarans are not just monohulls with outriggers - the trimaran form generates huge loads that are simply not present in a monohull and as such the entire boat must be reengineered to take the stress. For example the compressive load on the front beam during normal sailing on my F31 exceeds 10,000#
In the '60s many home built designs were tried and many of these boats simply fell to bits when they were sailed in any kind of weather. That gave the whole trimaran form a bad name which still exists today. As you will hear from many people who have built quality tris' theyre construction has more in common with aircraft than boats.
