I think that "water proof" is the most costly feature with a handheld. If you are willing to settle for something that is not water proof, you can get a handheld for under $100, with most all the same features as the more expensive ones. The Hummingbird hand held is only around $80, and has all the basic features like weather band and programmable multi channel monitoring.
